May I Have This Dance?

by Precious Oli

She looked at me and said
“Presh, you won’t understand, you have not experienced life”
“Interesting” I smiled

“what is interesting about what I just told you now, my friends are all getting married and having babies”
“still interesting” I said scrolling through my phone, it had been a month already since we started this “talk”.
I looked up to lovingly smile at her,holding her hands;

“I have a friend, she is married and happy because she married the right man with a purpose, my friend tells me the good sides of marriage, the romantic playful sides, the studying together and praying together, laughing and crying together but one thing she always never fails to tell me is;

“Presh, marriage is a journey of faith, forever is a long time to marry wrongly based on emotions, or depression caused by pressure”

The day she took her vow, she said as her hands were tied together to her husband, in following of the orthodox marriage ritual where the officiating priest wraps up the couples hands with the stole round his neck: she felt a cloud of witness were  gathered, it was more spiritual to her than physical, she muttered a heartfelt prayer
“Lord, I need your grace”

I looked up at my friend, stared deep into her eyes and asked:
Nne biko, how many of your married friends told you their life visions and it’s jealously inspiring you to become a better version of yourself.

Eehm, how many of those your married friends challenge you spiritually, the way they fast, study the word and hear from God makes you want to spend time with them and dig deeper into the treasures of heaven?
How many virtues in them do you admire and want to be in yours?

Why are you not equally desperate to get to the height they have attained in other areas of life asides marriage?
You say I haven’t seen life?” I need a book called too much for nineteen” a summary of my life at 19
We all don’t need to carry the burden of our life issues boldly written and worn on our forehead and face with a frown that says “console me, “I have seen life”

Life? It’s a Journey and no matter the age of a man, he has seen the travails of life, no matter how small, the sun has hit the centre of his head.

You don’t see a man of purpose sit down to think and reminisce over his life troubles and tears, he simply keeps pushing,
I need not a banner that reads “am a witness to travails of life”

” I simply sit down and enjoy the rest of the evening”

There are times when the same marriage is desired by some of us too but on closer revaluation of yourself, baring yourself before the secret master and hitting yourself hard with truth and reality, you tell yourself
“babe, you are not ready for this”

You might think because Chinenye is married and doing fine, you can equally do fine now once you get married, you don’t know the pressure of the heat, the strength of the fire except you pass through it yourself.
“Darling, if you are not happy single, you won’t be happier taken, your happiness comes from within not from being walked down the aisle or changing your last name”

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Jeremiah 29 : 11
Dance with purpose first, the right man with a more defined purpose and vision with whom you can perfectly fit into his life, who compliments your life in a way that makes it better not to be single, will show up and when he says;
“may I have this dance?”

You don’t need any prophet, you will know he is the “one”
we smiled and continued on our way to purpose.

You all are my inspiration on this journey

At first when I was a kid,I believed a lot about marriage,where two people will work hard to make their life worth living .seeing society we live in today, am not sure my view in marriage still stands,spending your life questioning your self,whether or not you made the right decision marrying the one your with is the question that will keep harming in your mind,but like they said seeing is believing, another persons life might never be the same as yours.

still we can’t use the fear of something stop us from the destined joy of it.

I couldn’t agree more dear,we definitely can’t reject the joy of marriage cause of the fears of it
